A quick explanation of each of these exams
IELTS
The International English Language Testing System or the IELTS is a standardised test which is used to judge the language proficiency of non-native speakers. The test is divided into four sections: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Scores are given in bands between 0 and 9 with increments of 0.5.
It is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP, IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment of English. Two types of tests are administered, the IELTS Academic and the IELTS General. Students can choose between the paper-based format and the online format for both types of tests.
PTE
The Pearson Test of English or the PTE Academic is used to assess the language proficiency of non-native speakers. It is endorsed by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) which conducts the GMAT exam. The test is designed to assess two skills of the four (reading, writing, listening and speaking) at the same time.
The test is online and is conducted by Pearson VUE and the scoring adheres to the International standards prescribed by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) . The scores are allotted between 10 and 90.
TOEFL
The Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is used to judge the language proficiency of those non-native speakers who wish to enrol in English speaking universities. One of the most widely accepted tests across the globe, it is a common pre-requisite for most North American universities. The test is conducted by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in Mumbai. The test is divided into four sections: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Each section in the test is scored out of 30 and the candidates therefore get a total score out of 120.
